The Situation

The Lily Project is a nonprofit founded in 2015 to combat cervical cancer (the leading cause of death among young Nicaraguan women) and to provide sexual health education to rural teenagers across Latin America and the Caribbean. In-person education was their primary channel. Then the 2018 political crisis in Nicaragua took that away.

The women The Lily Project served had no existing mobile platform designed for their context — young, rural, in low-connectivity environments. A government crackdown on NGOs threatened operational continuity entirely. Women in rural areas had no route to health professionals for urgent consultations.

What We Did

One Primero developed Chava, the first mobile sexual health app designed specifically for young Latinas. It was built from the ground up for low-bandwidth environments, entry-level smartphones, and full user anonymity.

The anonymity design was not a feature. It was a requirement. Women in these communities could not risk identification when seeking health information. The platform was engineered so that no usage could be traced back to an individual user. Low-bandwidth optimization ensured the app functioned in rural areas where data connectivity was limited or intermittent.

What Followed

Chava is the first platform of its kind for Latin America and the Caribbean. It enabled life-saving real-time interventions for women who had no other access to health professionals. When the political crisis forced The Lily Project's in-person operations to shut down, the mission continued digitally.
